Reviewer Rating: * * * 1/2 A killer is stalking women. Feeding on their fear. Hiding in shadows. He has chosen his next victim. Jolene Young. Young, pretty, vulnerable. He knows he can make her afraid. He likes women to be afraid. He’s watching her and waiting, dreaming of how pleasurable her fear will be. In her book “Approaching Danger’’, June Shaw creates the thrilling story of a woman pursued by a killer. Shaw builds her story masterfully, bringing the reader into the daily life of Jolene Young. Living with a mother who is obsessed with being beautiful and a younger brother suffering from kidney failure, Jolene is so intent on holding her family together that she doesn’t notice at first that she is being followed. At work. At home. A killer is watching her, waiting to revel in her fear….. Jolene had no idea that a man watched her stride across the lawn to her house. He smirked, assured that she would not grin as she did if she knew his plans. She was entangled with him in his mind's eye, and he silently sang a snippet of a song he recalled an elder female singing. "You and me against the world. Sometimes it seems like you and me against the world -- " His song halted. The older woman in his thoughts turned to him. The smile she had worn left her face. In its place came an expression of scorn. He felt his mirth leave. He was so small, she so large. She raised the big hand of hers that always found something. Her hand rose up above him, and he knew his eyes turned to little balls. Balls of fear…… That woman smiled, and he whimpered in fear. Like the fear he'd discovered that Jolene could show best. He shoved away the woman's image. In its place came the scene with Jolene with him the captor. Now that he'd become an adult, he was the victor…… Soon, Jolene… Be waiting for me because very shortly you will show me the most exquisite picture of pure terror. Jolene is fighting many battles in her life. She tries to confront her mother about her obsessive behavior while battling to save the life of her brother, who is critically ill. And she has fought to help the man she loves break free of gambling addiction. Now she will have to fight for her life. On a stormy turbulent night, she will face her greatest fears and confront a killer. Approaching Danger is a suspenseful romantic thriller. Shaw has created a real page-turner, with enough twists and turns in the story line to keep the reader enthralled. Although there are no graphic descriptions, the story does involve murder, rape and sexual overtones and is a book for adult readers.
